Water Pump
Alright I need some advice, but first let me preface this by saying that I do not know a lot about engines (I am learning slowly, but to date my knowledge is limited). Anyways, I have a 99 with 57,000 miles. While it was in the shop (for something else), I was told that my water pump is leaking...... Is this common? Usually you have to get a new water pump and timing belt closer to 90,000, correct? Also, I just had this car inspected at the Acura dealership (thanks to customer appreciation week), is this something that they could have/should have seen? The timing belt/water pump and linkages (with labor) will cost close to $600.......so, I would rather not do it if I don't have to, but on the other had it is necessary, I guess I have no choice. Any advice? Thanks a lot...
if it was leaking, you'd notice that your car would quickly heatup or overheat. Do you experience such problems or notice coolant on the ground?
600 is a bit much for the change. I'd shop around before getting the job done.

I haven't noticed coolant on the ground. Is this something that I can "watch" for a little or do I need to get it taken care of right away? I mean if I watch the temp. and make sure it doesn't ?..... How common is this?

do you know what a car overheating looks like on the temp guage? If it goes over 1/2 way. You have problems. Cut it off and cool her down.
Waterpump failure will cause the car to overheat, i'm not to sure if it can actually "Leak"

if you take a look at the water pump itself
right behind the gear you will find a hole
if the bearing seal gives up you will see it leaking.
its a safety feature just to let you know that the bearing is not good.

I let my waterpump leak for about 30K miles. Not the smartest thing but I didn't have the time and or the money to get it fixed. I waited until the stock clutch when out and 137K (not too bad
) and did a water pump and timing belt install while doing the clutch. I took the motor completely out of the car
