Default Washing Engine

After a shitty winter with lots of salt, my engine compartment has mud, sand, salt all over it. I was wondering if spraying it down with soem engine degreaser and powerwashing the compartment is a bad thing.

How can you clean it like they do with steamcleaners at your own house. I want this thing to be lookin like new, like it did a few months ago.

I just covered my distributor, wet down the engine bay, sprayed Simple Green, let it soak, then rinsed it off. Then I went to town w/ Armor All, let it soak in, then wiped it down and I ended up with this (motor has about 120K miles on it in this pic):

nope, not even the battery.... after my friend installed my timing belt last year, he washed my engine for me and didn't even cover the dist. cap, he was just careful to not spray it directly w/ hard pressure, car still ran fine afterwards.

I'd also cover up the brake & clutch fluid reservoirs, including the ABS reservoir. Or at least don't spray them. They each have a vent, and you don't want water getting into the brake fluid.

Your distributor is the main thing you need to worry about getting moisture into. I always cover the distrib, air filter and alternator

that is all you have to cover up.

wet the engine, spray degreaser on it (like simple green), let it sit for about 5 to 10 minues and then rinse off. repeat this if engine is still dirty and then just go to town with some type of silicone spray and wipe everyhting down.

Hey arent you guys afraid of calcium buildup if u r just using ur garden hose? I know some self serves have a engine washing setting. It's prob safer to do in the summer, and then driving it on the freeway afterwards to heat up the engine and evaporate any moisture. In the vegas heat, water evaporates quick.

here's what i did:

Let your car run for about 3 mins, just to get it warmed up a little.

Spray a product called STEAM all over your engine bay.

Pressure wash off.

Came out sparkling clean and ready to go! Go get steam, I HIGHLY recommend it

What ever you guys do, do not use any type of silicone on your hoses under the hood of the car, it will eventually eat away and make these hoses dry rot, i know it looks good when ur done but fair warning.....

Yeah, I think you just go to Wal-Mart and pick up a few cans. Just steam and a pressure washer is all I used. Came out SUPER nice!

take off the wires and cover the holes with duct tape . simple green "automotive" works really good .
