Yes, it switches to the more aggressive cam lobe when VTEC engages.

I have a 1996 integra with a ls/vtec (using a B16a head) and i run a 1996 GSR (P72) ecu and i feel the vtec kick at 4500rpm, but it seems like it adds more fuel once it hits 5400+rpm, almost like a two stage vtec(which i know its not). anyone have any comments to add to this?

If you're running a stock ECU (which I'm guessing you are since you said it was a 1996 p72...), the VTEC engagement point is too low for a single-stage intake manifold like those on the B16's and Type-R motors. The P72 is programmed for the dual-stage intake manifold on the GSR (it has secondary butterflies..)

On the stock P72, VTEC is set at like 4400 rpm, and the butterflies are supposed to open at ~5500 or so.. (I forget where, exactly..). When you run the p72 with a single-stage IM, the VTEC point is too low, and will cause it to bog until around 5600 or so like you're feeling, since it has no secondary butterflies to open up. If you have a VAFC or another way of changing the VTEC engagement point, set it up around 5500, and you should feel a lot smoother transition.

Nice, thanks for the quick reply, know anyone that has a APEX-I VAFC-II for sale, for a reasonable price?

thanks for all the input guys....i was thinging about putting in another chipped p72 vtec engages at 5500 rpms along with the secondaries. i was wondering if the stock setup is better...knowing the GSR needs the torque all the way untill the secondaries.

You don't need to change the VTEC point unless you have changed out the intake manifold to a skunk2/blox or similar, single stage manifold. If you still have the stock GSR manifold with the secondaries, you'd probably be better off leaving the VTEC/secondaries RPM engagement points alone.

hes got a b16 head... so he doesnt have the 2 stage manifold... hes saying its dumping fuel cause the ecu thinks the 2ndaries are there... when they arent.

sk8phaze is the one with the b16 head ... The original poster (Lauj87) just said he had a 96 GSR, so that's what I was referring to.

i though vtec kicks in at 5500? mine does but you can hear it good at ~6000 rpm.

vtec engages at 4400rpm in a B18C. The secondary runners open at ~5800rpm. This may be what you are hearing since you can hardly hear the vtec crossover in a stock car.
