My concer is how I can know if a transmission is stolen or if its legal?

Let me explain. I am about to buy a b-series transmission and here in Puerto Rico the police division for "stolen vehicles" is a "pain in the ***". Is even worse for honda/acura owners being the first choice for thieves. They are always checking labels, VIN's, motor codes, etc.

The engine block, I know it have its number engraved on the block, just below engine model code. But with transmissions, most of them (maybe since 1994), they just have a label with the case (or transmission) model and a number with a bar code. Later models, like my 01 civic, have a green plate with the VIN engraved.

What means those numbers on the label? Are like transmission's VIN, part number? Again, my 01 civic have both, the label with model & numbers, and the the green plate with the VIN engraved.

Since when (what model year) honda/acura start coming with the labels and/or green plates with VINs? What if it does not have it, is missing?

That white label could be lost just because it lost the "glue", by cleaning or pressure washer, any chemical or degreaser, heat, etc.

Is there any other number engraved on the tranny?

 

The green label apeared in 1996 in the US. I'm pretty sure that pre 96 transmissions did not have a VIN on them.

JDM engine/transmissions do not have VINs on them either.

 

There is any form to confirm/know if it is 96 or previous? I think the answer is no, but if any please let me know.

If it is hydraulic with front mount, which model year it should be?

 

96+ USDM transmissions will either have the green VIN plate (like in your 2nd pic) or will have 2 rivet holes from where someone removed the VIN plate. Look for drill marks. If someone drilled it out....you can make the assumptions from there.

However....JDM 96+ transmissions have the rivet holes but no VIN plate ever went there. So JDM transmissions should have clean rivet holes with no drill marks. You can place your VIN plate on via some rivets and those holes.

Before 96, there was just a white sticker like in your 1st pic.

 

Hi people I have a 95 Integra with a b16 a swap.2nd Gen I can't find what tranny I have for sure the serial code starts with a s-80.i dont think it's lsd equipped unfortunately.but was wondering if anybody knows which one I have or if its an ideal tranny for an eventual boost setup after rebuild?

 

Even with the codes you are never sure unless you open it and count gears yourself. This days most of those tranys had been opened and parts replaced as wanted or as available. And all hydraulic cases are similar if not the same.

I opened mine and ended with ~94+ GSR gears with B16 (del Sol/civic si) 4.40 FD.
