Default TRANS QUESTION

Is it possible to put b16 gears on an ls input shaft, Cause i got a tranny and it had 24 splines like an ls but the tranny plate had been scraped off, So when i put it in i noticed that in 5th gear at 60 mph the motor is at 3800 rpms. I asked around and its the same as a b16. The point im getting at is that 3rd gear grinds real bad but i dont know what syncro to buy, any suggestions?

eh, i'd try to find the person you bought it from and ask from there, that might be eaiser than trying to trace it mechanically.

it is possible that there is a B16 FD in it. or fifth gear, or all the gears. maybe it was a B16 tranny that needed a new case, and it got an LS case. any of the gears will fit from LS cable to B16 cable; anything is possible. i vote B16 w/ LS case; it's more common. most just ditch their LS tranny in favor of B16 instead of swapping gears, at least in my experience.

do you know if i can take the internals from a hydro ls trans and put it in my cable ls case?

if not, then will just the final drive and syncros from a hydro work in a cable trans?

none of that stuff from a hydro tranny will fit into a cable case, to the best of my knowledge. they're just not the same. i'm interested in buying any parts you have though . . .

thanks for the quick reply.... I dont have any parts yet, I was gonna try and find a hydro ls trans if it was possible. damn, this really sucks I was hoping for at least the final drive to swap over... do you know whats different between the two? i mean the defference between the hydro ls final drive (4.2XX) and my cable ls (4.4).

thanks for the help.

the parts are similar, but not identical, and won't fit. don't bother trying to swap anything over. just get hydro parts for hydro, cable parts for cable. really. there are a lot more gear choices for hydro, but there are still a wide variety for cable, and parts should be cheaper for cable than hydro.

thanks a lot for all of the help. I think I am gonna try a cable to hydro conversion.

you know cable to hydro conversion only convets the car to accept a hydro tranny. you'll still need a whole hydro tranny. you still won't be able to swap parts from one tranny to another. just FYI.

the low LS final drives won't have much effect on mileage. any change in final drive from 4.266 to 4.4 or vice versa won't be much of a change. i switched from 4.266 to 4.40 and at 75mph, my engine speed went up 105rpm. now up to 4.785, that's a bigger deal, you might lose 1mpg or 2 on the highway b/c it increases cruise engine speed by like 350rpm, but if your engine is at a higher speed, you'll need less gas pedal to keep it going, so may see no difference at all.

cable LS vs hydro LS, the hydro has a longer final and longer 5th gear. the cable does 250rpm higher at 75mph than the hydro in 5th gear. still no big deal IMO.

I guess I keep looking at it like this... right now im at 4k rpm doing 80 mph, in my old 94 ls i was around 3500rpm doing 80 or so. I deffinitly got better gas mileage as well with my old car. Right now Im getting 260 to the tank, so approx. 20 mpg, which doesnt seem that good at all imo. Also I have been going to Atlantic City a lot recently and I was hoping for better gas mileage on the way(i think its 80-90 miles one way) and that 260 to the tank was all highway... cruising at 100 i was around 5k rpm.

Just adding to the confusion here....

GSR gears fit onto an LS countershaft, not sure about the mainshaft though (I don't see why they wouldn't though). GSR gears I believe are just like B16 gears, so they should fit.

As someone said before, check to see if maybe the final drive was changed. In that case, the countershaft would have had to been replaced anyway. And in that case, the B16 gears should fit.

i believe all 1-5 gears will interchange on hydros, gsr, b16, ls, itr, whatever. 4.785 itr's have a different countershaft first gear, however, not sure about mainshaft side, but i've never bothered replacing a first gear except for 4.785 conversions.
