Default too cold?

the engine coolant temp guage will barely go past the cold line. radiator fluid is at the perfect level. If I let it idle for about 10-15 min it will go up to about 1/4 past the cold mark. but once I start driving it cools back down and the vtec stops working because it is too cold. Any idea what would cause this? the radiator is brand new, maybe I should replace the thermostat?

A new radiator will do that to you when it's freezing like this. I would just tough it out without vtec until it warms up a bit.

always do thermostat when you do a new rad. fluid is out of motor and you are right there. Now you have to go back and drain the sys it is a time waster.

Sounds like the thermostat doesn't close all the way. My GSR comes up to normal temperature, even as cold as it is this morning. I bet Vegas isn't as cold as northeast Ohio these days...

If the car is cool while driving, and warms up after your sitting for a while, most likely your thermostat is bad. Simple replacement.

And always do a thermostat if something with your coolant system isn't working right or the car is not at the right temp... It's a cheap part, and fairly straight forward install...

well if it's -20 out don't worry about it too much.

it's been so cold lately that even if my car is fully warmed up and i let it idle for a few minutes, the gauge actually goes down (about 1/4 of the way in a few mins!)

very cold + strong wind will do that

The car should warm up completly, even when it's that cold. Mine warms up, and I have a fludiyne.

I have a cold realted problem as well...I just picked up my new 2001 LS and it was nice and peppy first day...I got on it a little bit cuz I was excited...(possible cause) and then after the weather warmed up a bit it seemed a bit sluggish, didn't dare trying to see if I was like imagining shiz...I also bounced off the fuel cut once in the extreme cold because i didn't have her quite figured out yet...but even after that it still ran perfectly...nothing seems to sound different either...the motor only has 35000 and some change on her

Its a very simple install. You can pick up a replacement thermostat at your local Pep Boys for $4.99
