Starter Replacement
I've had on and off trouble starting my car, and I'm trying to narrow down the problem. Every once in a while when I turn the key, I hear the electric whir, but no turnover sound. I try jumping it, but that doesn't help, so now I've been told it's the starter (considering tapping it with a hammer helped this morning
).
What price should I look at for changing out a starter? Is this something easy enough to take a Saturday out and do it myself? I have limited experience, some tools, and a hayne's and helms, I just haven't been home for more than 2 minutes to look through them.
TIA.

i just replaced my starter, took about 1 hr. it was 8 in the morning too. the bottom bolt on the starter is the hardest, other then that it is pretty easy.
Maybe that's not my problem then. Any other ideas as to what's wrong?
Symptoms: I go to start the car, it gives a steady electric whir or whine (however you describe it) and doesn't turn over. After a few successive tries every once in a while it will finally kick in. This morning I had to tap the starter to get it to go. Any suggestions?

You need to replace your starter by either DIY rebuilding it if your into that kind of stuff or taking it down to the local auto shop and core trading in for a rebuilt one or you could just buy a new one depending. Also, good luck replacing the starter, it really tests your patience, especially that back bolt
Well I've learned patience is the key, and I'll probably head down to the shop on base here because it's less than $4 an hour for a stall. That way I can take my time, have all the tools I could ever need, and a little bit of advice if I need to grab a mechanic. From what it sounds (and looks) like, it's not that difficult, except for getting to it. I'm going to head to autozone tonight and see what they have to offer for starters, since I need to pickup my oil change stuff anyway.
Thanks for all the help!

If you decide to rebuild here is a link that shows you how to rebuild it with parts from Toyota, the parts shouldn't be more than $30.

I'm guessing all b-series starters are the same right? I have a 1990 Integra w/ a 1998 b20. Thanks.

I just looked at that article, seems extremely simple, I think I'll give that a shot instead! Thanks!

QUESTION
Just because Toyota doesn't have long hours...
Does the first part number listed include the whole kit, or are both necessary?
- 28226-74070
- 28226-64370
The first one is in stock, $15, and the guy has no idea what's needed and what's not. Thanks.
