Stabilizer Bushing

I was doing an oil change on my 94 Teg and noticed that the Front Stabilizer Bushing (item #5 in the diagram) is cracking.

Questions:

1) Are they critical, ie: will changing it help with ride and handling

2) Is there a special procedure, looking at it I assume you just unbolt and replace. Looks straighforward

3) It is a daily driver, so would it be critical? Has anyone else changed this?

Thanks in advance

Re: Stabilizer Bushing
1) Replacing the worn bushing will improve ride & handling by tightening up both. It will help the car feel more buttoned-down, and less loose, particularly in corners and over bumps (in the case of that specific bushing)

2) That bushing is a simple unbolt & replace job.

3) Replacing worn bushings is equally important for daily drivers as well as track cars.

I'd recommend that you replace it for sure. However if that bushing is wearing then I suspect most or all of your other bushings are worn as well. Check the other bushings you can easily see both in front and in back (rear trailing arm and rear upper control arm are easy to spot). Replacing the bushings will make your car feel 10 years younger and can also get rid of squeaks and groans you may be hearing from the car.

And although the stabilizer bushings are easy to replace, changing out the others is not for the faint of heart...

FYI you posted a link to a pic of the rear, not front suspension

Re: Stabilizer Bushing
Thanks for the response.

I didn't think the front stabilizer bar helped much in the way of handling? Stealership quoted me $10/ each. So I'm looking at 8 total for $80.

I believe the other bushings you are referring to are 9 and 14? Yeah, those need to be pressed in.

Re: Stabilizer Bushing
It helps control front end body roll during cornering. I think you'd notice it if it wasn't there, unless you're running really high rate springs (which do the job of the stabilizer).

I'm not sure you'd feel a change in handling as much as you would if you replaced more 'important' bushings like the rear trailing arm bushing, but I have to imagine it will still improve.

9 and 14 in your diagram are the front lower control arm bushing and the front shock bushing. Those are pretty important but they're hard to look at without removing the arm. The rear bushings are easier to see.

RTA bushing is 4,5 on my MS paint diagram and rear UCA is 1,2

Re: Stabilizer Bushing
It's probably doing something for you -- those aren't very aggressive springs. Replacing worn bushings is always a good policy. The bigger issue is that if those are worn all of your other bushings are probably worn as well, unless you've already replaced them. OE bushings last a long time but 10-15 years is their limit.
