Icon3 Speedometer Problems

Hey guys/girls, I recently came by an 93 integra i want to buy but the RPM's on the speedometer has been going crazy and i don't know how to explain it or how to fix it. I don't know how much it will cost or what the real damage is to the car. The car idles fine and runs great. The speedometer just goes crazy. If you guys can help me out it would be great! thanks.

Heres an example on YouTube: http://youtu.be/BCYAokALEeQ

I've got an occasional similar problem with my speedometer, unlike the video where it's the tachometer. Now and again it will stick at 0 on initial driving or jump around erratically and correct itself while driving, especially if I swerve the vehicle. I'm sure there is someone on this site that can explain this behaviour.

So are you referring to the RPM needle or Speedo? Jumpy RPM needle can be a bad ground at your thermostat or bad ignition coil.

Jumpy speedo can be a bad speed sensor or corroded speed sensor plug.

Thanks for the opinion on the jumpy speedo. I've ordered a new speed sensor for less than $20 and will give it a try. Looking at the plug,I didn't see any corrosion as it looked spotless when I removed it.

What kind of car do you have? If the VSS isn't the problem then most likely the problem is with the speedo PC board. If you need any help diagnosing/repairing the speedo circuit let me know. I'm a Honda/Acura tech in NC full time and repair elecronics in my spare time. I can repair your speedo with quick turn around time and for a good price.
