Speedometer off by 10mph
My speedometer is off by 10 mph the whole way. If it says Im doing 30mph, Im really going 20, @ 80mph Im actually going 70mph. Im sure you get the point.
I have a 95 gsr 5 speed with swirlies tire size 205/50/15 (I Know it should be 195/55/15) but thats what was on it when I bought the car in Oct.
Now if the tire size was off and the revs/mile were alot different that would give the wrong speed but not a consistant 10mph off correct? It would change the faster you go. That has atleast been the results that I have delt with before. Plus I dont think the revs/mile difference between stock size and whats on it is big enough to make it off that much.
It does look like someone at one point had overlays on the gauges. Im new to hondas so Im not too sure how everything will work in them. I need some suggestions of what to look at before I start throwing parts on it. Like anything on back of gauge cluster, issue with speed sensor, taking needles off and putting them back on to "reset" the magnet between cluster and needle (if thats how honda gauges work), ect....
I'd like to try what I can before having to try a new speed sensor for $200 and having that not work

You can pull the needles to calibrate the gauges. Use a hand held GPS to calibrate the speedometer and an external tachometer to calibrate the tachometer. You will need to adjust the fuel and temperature gauges to suit your needs.
once you think you have them calibrated i would say to do what i do...
use mapquest and yahoo on a particular stretch of straight rd about 3 miles in lenth...drive that without changing lanes and make sure your counter matches up

Pulling the gauge needles is not going to affect the calibration of the odometer. If the odometer is not reading correctly you need to fix the VSS and or the speedometer. Anyway, GPS > Mapquest, as GPS provides both speed and distance.
