Default speedometer

I was on the highway last night and one of those new 06 civics merged on. I was in the left lane and my speedo read 55mph, but that HUGE digital speed display in the civic showed 50mph and we were doing the same speed, my front bumper by his door the whole time???? I remembered there was one of those Speed display things that the cops put up sometimes in my town, that was on my way home, i wanted to test my speed on it, but it wasnt there last night. Anyways what could be the cause of this?

Tire size could cause it to be off.
Might just need recalibrated.
