Get your manual and follow the troubleshooting for VSS.
The VSS works on pulses from the rotating final drive/differential. The speedo/ECU counts the pulses and calculates the speed. Either the wire is bad, possibly right behind the intake mani it's shorted, or the speedo is dead. You test by checking for pulses of 12V at the speedo. With the ignition on and and one wheel in the air, you should see on-off-on-off pulses when you rotate the tire. If not, start checking your wiring. It's not that hard to wire up completely from scratch.
