Default something is off

I just picked up a nice clean unmolested 94 ls. First Teg for me. Figured I'd try something different from EF's for a change. the car has a slight miss upon startup and seems to almost disappear once the car warms up. So far i have adjusted the valves, and replaced plugs/wires/cap/rotor. it seems like slight pinging as well under a load at lower rpms. i know bogging it is bad but im not quite that low. Is there anything specific I should be looking for? I am running it on 87. Do i need higher octane? I thought only the gsr needed super. I'm at a loss with the miss. It makes plenty of power up top and doesnt miss a beat. thanks for any insight into this.

Short the service connector and check that the ignition timing is correct. You could also do a compression test.

I found some info on the service connector. When I jumped it out and turned the key the service engine light just stayed lit so I assume no codes, correct? Turned out poop boys sold me defective wires. The outer jacket was split and it was arcing to my distributor. Almost cant hear the motor running now its so quiet and smooth. Now if I jump out the service connector, whats the procedure for checking my timing? I will be borrowing a compression tester from my buddy. I want this thing to run absolutely perfect before/if I mess with it any further. I think I'm kinda hooked on this car.

Use a timing light, jumping the connector prevents ECU/ECM from adjusting timing while you are...
