Default replace 5th gear with custom

I was playing with the gear ratio calculator ( http://www.team-integra.net/se...=true ) and was wondering if anyone could show me some potential problems with the idea of a custom 5th gear that could lower engine speeds at 80mph to roughly 2500 RPM. I see no reason to be cruising on the edge of vtec when I have a factory spec 4th gear at those speeds for passing

In other words, can I create a "grand touring" style imitation 6th gear?? It seems reasonable that a machine shop could make something like that .......

Why not just an LS fifth gear and final drive if you want something for cruising?

I'm still learning how exactly the gearing works ... what is the difference between the LS 5th with and without the LS final ?

the ls final drive will slow the rpm down of all of your gears, collectively.
It is like one giant gear that affects them all.

the LS 5th gear won't help you much without the final drive. You might drop 500rpm or so in 5th. big deal.

But your original question is about putting a different 5th gear in.
That's my question too. My LS goes at 3000rpm @ 68mph or something like that. There is definetely enough passing power in 5th, but i don't really need that.

I'm wondering if you can drop in a b20 transmission or a b20 5th gear actually..
