Re: Steering Issues
My problem started to happen after I put on my 16" rota slipstreams and yokohama tires. Actually I first had 97 GSR wheels which were great, then I sold them to this guy who in turn gave me his old white 14" wheels. For about three weeks I had the white wheels on and it was bad. I couldn't drive past 50 MPH, cause the car would shake like hell. I hated driving, but I was waiting on my ROTA wheels, which were on backorder.
Finally I received my new ROTA wheels and afterwards I had steering problems:
When driving straight, my car tends to bear left.
Whenever I hit a bump in the road, my steering wheel will physically move to the left or to the right and sometimes even left then right. I hate when I'll come to a bumpy portion in the road, because my car goes crazy. Left, right, left right, right, left, well you get the picture....and it's not like the steering wheel is moving slightly to the left or to the right. The damn thing moves over 45 degrees to the left or right. It moves more to the left though.
Does this happen to anyone? Has this happened to anyone after you have put on bigger wheels?
I have put on new rotors, camber kit, gotten an alignment and had balancing done, and still the problem has yet to go away. I do know one thing: The tire rod on the drivers side has a little play, but I'm not sure if that is cause of my steering wheel issues.
If anyone has any advice or idea what is going on, Please let me know, and thank you in advance.

This started happening to me after I got my camber kit. I was lowered for over a year without it. I got tired of chewing up tires. I installed the camber kit. Since then it has pulled to the left. I have had it aligned twice. Everything is fine. Right now I am playing with tire pressures. It is a little better.
Now my issue is my camber kits are noisy as hell. I was not able to torque them to the spec(22 ftlbs I believe), because of binding. I loosened them a little. The nuts are not moving off. But they are irratating me during turning at low speeds.
I have the rubber bushings on mine, so they should not be noisy.

You can try tightening your steering rack. After a suspension change, my steering isn't as tight as it used to be and after a wheel alignment and balancing, I've been told it was my steering rack.
Your steering wheel irratically moving 45 degrees left or right isn't safe. I'd get that fixed ASAP.

Thanks. Never heard of the steering rack, but I'll get it checked out. After my alignment, the problem still existed, and so I told the mechanic, but he didn't even know what it was which was surprising
I read on this board that once you get fatter tires, especially low profile high performance tires, the car tends to "track" more. I used to have 185 14" on my car and when I drove my friends car with stock 195/55/15 I thought her steering wheel was messed up cause it liked to follow any bumps it found especially when slowing down. Since then I moved up to 205/55/15 and its even worse than my friends car. Oh well thats what you pay for in going for performance. I'm moving back down to stock size when these wheels wear out. the steering wheel is driving me nuts.
thanks again for the info!! It happened after I got my wheels, but I actually thought my car would be great after the addition, not worse. It looks great though.

My car tracked worse before I got the camber kit. It is not too bad now. It just wants to move over a lane to the left. I was playing with it yesterday. On the street it is not too bad. I spend most of my time on the freeway though.
