Default question on cat-back...

hey everyone, i have a question on my next mod. i own a 2k gsr (stock w/ cai). I'm planning to get a JDM Typer R header and a 2.5 carsound cat. i was told by a friend that my stock catback/exhaust would fit on the cat. i just want to confirm it with u guys since the sound cat is 2.5 and the stock exhaust is 2.0 in. i was wondering would it actually fit and if it does, wouldn't there be a bottleneck/loss of power? sorry, i'm a newbie and i don't mess with my car much.....

I think to better answer your question we're going to need just a little bit more information.

My first question would be what are your overall plans for the car? Do you plan to just perform basic bolt-on mods, are you going to turbo your car, supercharge, etc. Your answer to that will affect what size exhaust you should plan to go with.

Secondly, what model teg do you have (LS or Type-R)?

If you are planning on running a turbo or a blower, I would totally take the cat off and put a test pipe on. Keep the cat so you can put it back on if you have to go through emmissions. And even if you aren't going to run boost, i'd take the damn thing off anyway...robs you of a few ponies

safe estimate is an exhaust will be worth 3-5 whp with the other stuff done. You lose some of that from the fact that the cat to b-pipe drops from 2.5 to 2.0 without any taper. It works fine and isn't a huge deal but a 2.5" exhaust would work well with the cat.

I personally have a stock exhaust with a 2.5" cat but the R exxhaust is slightly larger. I would benefit from a larger exhaust as well but the extra noise isn't very appealing.

hey, intstead of buying an exhaust system, u guys think i can just go to a muffler shop and get a custom 2.5' piping and a muffler to solve the bottleneck problem? is it cheaper this way?

that would definitely fix your problem, and it is indeed cheaper

yes its alot chaper to just buy a muffler and go to an exhaust shop to and get 2 1/2" pipeing, i did the same and they did it for 150$ try and see if you can get mandrel bent pipeing and also make sure they do a good job on the flanges so there are no bottle necks, also there is a minimal hp loss between a hi flow cat and test pipe.
