Default Problems with VTEC - choking? lagging? disengaging?

Hey all, I'm wondering if any of you has encountered this problem before. I have a JDM type r engine that i'm running and the VTEC usually kicks at about 5500 rpm. Normally when it kicks in, it revs smoothly all the way to about 8800 rpm or so. For the past few days, it feels like its "choking." VTEC kicks in, then it disenagages at about 6500 rpm, kicks in again at 7700 rpm, and keeps going on like that a couple more times as it goes higher. Thats the best way i can describe it. Kinda feels like theres a rev limiter at every 1000 rpm increments after 5500. Please help if you might know what this problem is. THANKS!

Maybe your oil level is low. Check it.
