I always thought a "race cat" was just another name for a test pipe?

I'd get a good Hi-flow Cat over a testipe. A good cat such as Carsound, is :
1) Better for the enivironment
2) Performs nearly as well as a testpipe
3) CARB legal and will pass smog (Carsound Model 94006)
4) not as loud as a testpipe

im running a comptech header, 2.25 inch test pipe, and a tanabe racing medallion and it isnt that loud. After i put the test pipe on it was maybe just a little bit louder but the most difference was in the sound.....

Iv'e seen a dyno comparing a high flow cat vs. a testpipe on a Type R. The testpipe made 2 peak hp over the cat, but with the cat made 2 ft/lbs more peak tourque. test pipe's aren't worth it for the environment or your wallet if you get busted with one on your car. Be responsible, guys/gals.

Catalytic converters have come a long way in recent years. I think not having a cat is stupid. I'm not a tree hugger but **** if they didn't do much they wouldn't be there. But they really do help the enviroment and 2 hp isn't worthh killing the earth not to mention the fine.

plus isn't the fine like 1k for not having a cat? IMO run with a cat daily, and just use a testpipe for track if the power is that big of a difference

I voted for the high-flow cat even though I own a testpipe (and hate the ******* thing).

I'm currently using the stock cat.

i live in michigan so we dont have any CARB stuff, we have no inspections, and no emmission(sp) checks or anything...

therefore i have a testpipe...i just pulled off my stock cat off my 98GSR 2 days ago and in the middle of the night you cant even see a bit of light when a flashlight is held to the end...then, we put a hairdryer to the one end and could not feel one bit of air coming out the other end...that is rediculous, my new test pipe is resonated and is making differences on the "butt dyno" for sure

i've got a 2.5" resonated test pipe on my car and its ok. It isn't too much louder at all, just the sound changed a little bit. The only draw back is that it stinks, literally. And the back of your bumper gets all black. When I get the extra cash flow I will probably get a high flow cat like a carsound. Sol i say if u got the cash, go for the cat.

I run a straight pipe right now. Yea, I used to have a Carsound cat. It crapped out...gutted itself haha. Well, at least it looks like I have a cat (straight pipe runs thru the blown cat).

Gutting it is actually said to be worse. Just throw the straight pipe thru it. That's what I had my muffer shop do (actually they came up with the idea hehe)

If they didn't pass smog, then there would be no point for them . But to answer your question, yes they pass.. i just did my smog and I passed with a new highflo carsound cat last month You can get them at most muffler shops.. ebay.. online.. and I'm sure on here. Good Luck

I had a Carsound go out on me back @ the end of January... I'm STILL haven't got a replacement. I finally got frusterated enough with the situation that I bought a Jackson Racing High-Flow cat, and I must say that from what I can tell it is much better construction than the Carsound, not to mention that I tend to think that Jackson may actually stand behind their product if the thing fails after 8 months like my Carsound did...

Carsound

I will say though that I've had a carsound on my RX-7 for the past 3 years with no problems...

I am thinking abotu getting a high flow for my stock exhuast. It seems like the stock cat is a huge restriction in the air flow. I just sold my test pipe before I even installed it Maybe I shoul dhave given it a try. I dont know if I want to spend over 100 for a high flow. Can you get them cheaper than that

Stock cat, soon to be carsound high-flow... test-pipes suck, is it really worth what your doing to the air for an extra 2hp over a highflow cat? Besides, when your sitting in traffic the smell can really get to you.
