OBD1 B18A Swap Into 1990 DA: No Spark... Then Starts and Runs... Now No Spark Again??
I swapped a '93 B18A1 into a '90 shell, along with the loom, and tonight got around to firing her up.
First try, got fuel, but no spark. Then we seemingly did nothing... Played with a few fuses here and there and plugged/unplugged the ecu or so, then it started...
I didn't check the headunit status when all this was going on, but it was certainly getting power when the engine was running (though, still not working).
Anyway, I took it for a quick drive to test out my lack of powersteering, and see how she goes... Felt a bit sluggish. I forgot to change timing so I come back and get out the timing light. Its a few degrees retarded, so I loosen the distributor and the engine dies.
Now key to on gives no power to head unit, and I get no spark. Also, after a small amount of time, there would be a poping noise from the speakers. If it didn't happen, I could sometimes reproduce it by shaking the car (though, this could be complete coincidence)... I get the normal lights then the CEL goes off when the fuel pump has pumped for a bit, so it's not the back of the key barrel thing not sensing on.
What grounds/wires would cause a headunit to go from working, to having power (the screen lit up, but didn't display any writing at all, just backlit) then to nothing.
Also, my windows and mirrors do not work. But all dash accessories like sunroof/cluster brightness/etc.. work fine.
I only mention the head unit as there is obviously a short or something, somewhere, and I figure it may give clues as to where to start looking.
So my quesiton is, where do I start looking for the problem? Where do I start probing with the multimeter for a bad ground or something to that effect?
Its just wierd that it started working with us doing nothing to it, then stopped again by doing nothing to it...
Distributor should be fine, It was in my '93 DA before I wrote it off...
Thanks!
