Default o2 sensor problem

i drive my car for few hours and the engine check light comes on. it throws the code 1 which is 1st o2 sensor. but when i turn my car off and back on the check light goes away. is that mean my o2 sensor is bad or going bad or my car is running too rich that after driving for a while that the o2 sensor gets cloged up? or is that even possible? what you guys think. i dont want to just replace the o2 sensor and have the same problem later on again. thanks.
