o2 sensor or cat?

o2 sensor or cat?
my 96 gsr has a check engine light on and when my friend ran the comp it said it was the o2 sensor. i know plenty of you have experienced this and i was woundering where i should start because my friend said it may also be the cat that is causing the cel. i just bought it last friday and I need it smoged asap!
