New member, First GSR and a Question
Just wanted to say hello to you all, im a new member and just purchased a GSR not too long ago and running into some issues with it. help would be greatly appreciated.
1999 GSR w/ 145k, just went into a shop for a rebuild, because the valves burnt out, wanted to know if this rebuild is worth $2000 maybe more depending on what else needs replacing
bought the car not too long ago, the car has a new clutch, timing belt and hoses already done. the shop quoted me $2k for new head gasket, valves/ seals, honing cylinder head. they told me they'll will let me know if I need also need to replace piston, piston rings.
the car was bought for $6k with insurance payout, because my other car was totaled due to hitting a deer. so basically im putting $2k out of pocket to get this car running again.

Re: New member, First GSR and a Question
First off, welcome to the site. I'm new here myself, but not to the scene.
Second, what kind of rebuild would it be? Is it all OEM parts and specs, or are you planning on adding performance parts?
Third, I have to ask... you paid $6000 for this car? Is the body in excellent shape at least?

2). the body is in excellent condition actually, that was secondary reason I bought it. most GSR's around my area were beat to hell exterior and interior wise.

All right, cool. Glad you managed to find a good body.
I don't know where you live, and I'm no expert, but here's my opinion. You seem to trust this shop, and that's fine. However, it wouldn't hurt to get a quote from a few other places, local or otherwise, for the work they want to do. Places like King Motorsports provide detailed information on the work they perform on their website, which could come in handy. Hell, give them a call too and ask what they would charge, just to compare. You may find the price lower, higher, or even about the same.
Regardless, before you commit to spending all that extra money out of pocket, do some research and see what comes up before pulling the trigger on a job like this.

Re: New member, First GSR and a Question
Just wow, $6000 for a 13 year old GS-R with 145,000 mi, that needs $2000, [or more] in engine work.
Not trying to **** on your parade but with some patience I am sure you could have done better, maybe even ending up with with $2000 in your pocket rather then out of pocket.
With that said, welcome to HT. 94

Re: New member, First GSR and a Question
I did not even check your location to see that we are neighbors.
Since we are in the Bay Area our prices will be lot higher than middle of no where USA labor rates.
You might get better feed back if you listed out the prices.
Like:
head gasket 6 hours labor
head gasket $ xyz
resurface head 2 hours labor
etc, etc...

Re: New member, First GSR and a Question
Since you and hwyix are from the same area, I'll defer to your judgments on pricing compared to other areas in the country.
With that said, there's only one question left really. Are you willing to spend $2000 of your own money to fix this car that you spent all of your insurance on, and is this the best way to spend said money? Will that money have been well spent in the coming years in your eyes? Do it right, or do it twice.
If the answer is yes (and I'm pretty sure it is ), then go for it.
Just don't be an idiot like me and spend $3200 having your bottom end rebuilt to OEM spec, only to ignore oil loss issues and have it spin its bearings two years later.

Re: New member, First GSR and a Question
If I had the time to go through every mechanic and find a reputable one in the area for a cheaper price i would love that, but I'm in a rush to get the car running since its my only form of transport from and to work. If you have any good shops you know, I would love to know them. its really a hassle trying to find a trustworthy, reputable and affordable mechanic around bay area or anywhere at that.

It's great the rest of you can buy mint/nice gsr. For us 4k gsr == rice/salvage title/ghetto
I am sure the OP did not think he was getting a GSR that needed a head gasket. It is common for a honda/wrx/sti to need a gasket. Sometimes it is just a roll of the dice.
The EG hatch with a GSR motor that I bought was advertised with needing a head gasket.

Ok well think if you have it open you should just put after market stuff in it, it would save you money in the long run if you want to build it later on
