Neutral Safety Switch???
Does anyone know how to bypass this thing? Mine has gone out and my car won't start. I checked my repair manual and they don't say anything about it. If anyone know anything at all, it would be helpful. Thanks.
I dont understand? My car starts in nuetral. Is this on an alarm or somthing.
I think it's usually referred to as the "interlock" switch. Mine's been acting weird lately too. Doesn't work if the clutch is all the way in, only if it's about 1/2 inch out... made for a couple hours of confusion one day last week. Only figured it out by chance.
That's exactly what mine was doing a few months ago, but now it's gone. I figured it out by chance, too. When it was doing that, my mechanic told me that it was wearing out and that I could either get a new one, have him bypass it, or wait til it breaks. Stupidly, I waited and now I'm screwed because I need to go out of town on Tuesday. Do you know how to bypass it? No parts stores have it.
Thanks, I'd really appreciate that. I checked my Chilton's manual and they don't really say anything. I think I'm just going to have to take it some place tomorrow morning before I go in to work, because I have to have it working by Tuesday afternoon so I can do out of town.

Well... after looking at the manual I'm not much more educated on the subject. There are a few posts on this subject, search for "Clutch Switch" I couldn't reall ymake heads or tales of how to bypass it. A new one is somewhere between $20 and $30 on http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.net
Hope this helps.

It is easy to bypass... look under the dash and follow the clutch pedal arm up about 8in or so. You'll see 2 switches that the pedal bumps up against when the clutch is fully up.
The upper (topmost) switch is the one you want to bypass. Simply disconnect the wire connector that is attached to the switch, and jump it like you would when you are checking for codes on your service connector. Use a paper clip or a piece of wire or a spade connector.
Hope that helps.

The switch the pedal is against when the clutch pedal is out is for the cruise control. There should be one on the firewall that lets you start the car. You might check to see if it needs adjusting, first. I've never heard of one of these "wearing out". My 89 Camry never had any problems w/ the clutch start switch, and it was 12 years old and had over 150K miles when I sold it.

well when I refer to upper, I mean when the clutch pedal is out (clutch engaged). The switch that is closed when the pedal is out is for the cruise control, when you press the pedal even only slightly, this switch opens and the cruise is cancelled. There should be another switch that is pressed when the clutch pedal is all the way in (clutch disengaged), that is the start switch.
*edit* alright well I had the Camry in mind which had the clutch start switch on the firewall, but I see the Teg has them both away from the firewall, the start switch being above the cruise switch.
