my friend just bought a 97 type r motor from jdmmotorsports or whatever the site is, they said it was compression and leakdown tested etc, we changed all fluids, pumps, belts etc. we put it in his hatchback this weekend and today it started smokeing and loading up plugs, did a compression test and these are the numbers we got #1 - 196 #2 - 185 #3 - 176 #4 - 185, so my question is what should the compression be in a 97 type r motor with supposidely less than 45k kilometers and is the smokeing due to the rings? doest smoke at idle, on when WOT thanks in advance for your help

should be over 200 if I'm not mistaken... something definately looks wrong, esp w/ the #3 cylinder. Do a search in the Type-R forum and they should tell you... 210-215 is normal for a B18C1 (GSR)
Third cyl looks kinda low. Did you do it in that order? Sometimes a low battery will give false results. The closer the number the better. Squirt a couple of drops of oil in the low cyl and retry the test. Did it go up? Then your rings are worn.

When a motor has alot of miles it usually has lots of carbon buildup and that can actually make the compression numbers higher.
