Default need help, something wrong w/v-tec

hey peepz, yeah i need help on my 92 GS-R integra, somethings wrong w/ the v-tec, see it all happens when i start driving up to 5000rpm, v-tec kicks for a sec or two n than it shuts off and the check engine light comes on, and when u turn it off the ignition, the check light goes off when u turn off ur car, and u can do this problem over n over again. so if i wanted the v-tec to kick for a sec or two i have to start up the car again. i don't knoe what the problem is, i thought it was the v-tec solenold but i dunno, if yah can help that would be

This is unlikely. OBD1 doesnt have a logic module to check for mechanical problems as well as electical. As long as there are no shorts or open circuits, the CEL will stay off. Regardless of mechanical conditions. The check engine light comes on when something is wrong with the computerized engine controls that might affect emissions or emission controls. The ECU looks for 3 things to engage VTEC (besides the ignition being on). Speed sensor reading, Oil pressure reading, and coolant temp. If one of your sensors is malfunctioning, VTEC will not operate. If the VTEC solenoid itself has an ELECTRICAL issue, this will cause the CEL to come on.

This is the scenario: Your VTEC kicks in, but one of your sensors malfunctions (or senses that something isnt correct. Maybe no oil press, maybe bad coolant temp readings, maybe a faulty speed sensor. It only has a reason to check a certain function right after it kicks in. So VTEC turns off because all 3 parameters for VTEC havent been met, or the VTEC solenoid has an electrical fault.

OBD1 is stupid enough that if a fault (check engine light) is set, once you turn off the ignition, it will forget the fault till it happens again.

Check your speed sensor operation, your Coolant temp operation, your VTEC solenoid ground wire, and your oil level or oil pressure sensor function. See if you can get a hold of a scan tool or something (if they have software and a plug in for that year integra) make the light come on, and check it. If you cant get a hold of a scan tool, locate your malfunction check connector. Make the engine light turn on. You have to short 2 of the pins together i forget which ones. The ECU will make the engine light flash the code.

lol or just take it somewhere and have them fix it.

Edit: come to think of it, it's probably your VTEC solenoid. Try swapping a known good one in, and see what happens. If not, then check the wiring from your VTEC solenoid to your ECU.

ok, also whats wrong with this car or engine, it has oil leak on the head gasket, i guess previous owner got a new head gasket change n the mechanic didn't put the head n the block on even, so its leakin oil on that area, but this car rides hella smooth like new, ok i had my cousins's buddy open up the v-tec solenold n check that filter spot, it had jus a little specks on the filter nothing much, so we just cleaned it and put it back, still doing the same problem. yeah maybe i gots 2 get a new sensor or something, cuz what i thought was that oil was getting on to wires so it wasn't workin, but yeah i'll keep checkin, thanks
