best thing you could do is get a better gas gauge and do the math.

I would tend to doubt the accuracy of it, but nevertheless, here is something similar to what you are talking about.

why dont you jus calculate how much gas you are using (tank full) and divide.
everytime you gas up divide the miles traveled by gallons filled.

I know that, naturally, but I want to determine the best way for me drive with the intention of saving gas by the help of a mpg gauge

the way i get the best mpg= dont go above 3.3 k before 5th gear if you can help it and try to take the freeway when there isnt stop and go traffic.

your mpg should be pretty consistant.. so measure it few times in a row.. or just every now and then.. to do that.. fill the tank, reset trip odometer and drive around.. on next fill up.. divide miles driven by amount of gas you filled up - and thats your mpg.

That JCWhitney thing is probably a vacuum gauge. Not a *true* mpg measurement. Vacuum used to be more reliable to indicate mpg back when compression ratios were low.

The cars that have trip computer mpg readouts, that usually comes from the ECU, because they know the fuel use (from fuel map) and they know the distance. In those cars it's not a separate gauge that you can take & install into a different car.

Just do the math when you buy gasoline. If you want to get better mileage, keep your car tuned up really good. Then make a habit of shifting early & not racing.

I don't know how that guage works, but the only way to get a true measurement is to have a guage that can read the rate of fuel consumption, as well as your speed (tire size would play a role also).

you wont find a simple bolt on for what you are looking for.

Here's what you do for $10:
buy a notebook, pen and a calculator and start logging your trip distance at each fillup and divide the Mileage by the amount of gas filled up. You can get even more creative and drill down to the cost per mile. woo hooo.

its not just BMW's that have these gauges...

my old 89 lebaron had one it it, and so does my parents' new supercharged grand prix

they are actually probably pretty common...now their accuracy is probably questionable

I'm pretty sure that's a vacuum gauge. Look at the calibration from 0 to 25...

Any more, the ECU knows the injectors' duty cycle, and it gets a signal from the VSS. The rest of the math is pretty easy.
