Firsty of all i have an obd1 ecu while my car is obd2 does anyone know how to check the CEL its throwing.

1) Its in limp mode wont go past 3500 rpm
2) its very hard to drive when it warms up it seems, alot of jerking and what not goes on
3) Smoking, it only does this really when it seems to go in limp mode, it makes a rattling noise sounding liek its comming from the cat then BOOM a big cloud of white smoke comes out, and procedes to some throught driving.
4)Idle problem from 1k-2k
5)Any help will be appreciated THANKS!

what kind of engine do you have? check your map sensor plug and your TPS wires may be backwards.

already changed the map, tps is fine and its a b16b block and a jdm b16 head.

Im thinkin its probably the Crank angle sensor in the distributor but its hard to tell what cell its throwing becuase the car is obd2 and autozone and what not cant read it cause the ecu is obd1 [freak]in sucks.

What about a clogged cat, its clogged then pretty much coughs and bam the smoke?

another buddy said Piston rings and i dont think its the Headgasket cause i doesnt leak.

simple enough. get an ob2 ecu wire it up. or get the adapter for the scan tool. or take it to a mechanic to retrieve the code. also you may be able to do the paper clip trick. someone correct me if im wrong.

At first glance it sounds like timing. A clogged cat wouldn't put you in limp mode, but it's hard to tell without being under the hood. Your rattling sound is likely resonant from an extreme engine vibration.

Just to rule out the simple solutions, double check your ignition. It could be anything from the diz to your spark plugs causing ignition issues & throwing codes, or any number of harness electrical issues.

Also check your timing belt assembly, make sure it's tight & not making any noises during operation; a worn-out belt, or faulty tensioner/ water pump can affect operation & would explain your exploding ***.

Could just be a bad ECU too, swapping with a known working unit is a good move.

The paper clip trick should bring up a code as long as the engine light output is hooked up, I'm still not exactly clear why you swapped to a virgin OBDI in the first place though.

Yeah i had a problem a couple days ago, a buddy had one of the injector wires backwards and pretty much fried my ecu causing me to run on three cylinders and put a stock ecu back in and ran fine.

Update: had a 16 and code 41 cel, unplugged the two o2 sensors and plugged them back in, bam no cell but i still have the idle problem. and it jerks hard around 1-3k rpm? i notice i have a bad tie rod on the passenger side too? could that be the cause.

...I'm hoping you corrected the backwards injector wire?
It may have fried the connection during that fiasco, or possibly even the injector (not likely, but I've gotta cover the bases)

No, tie rods don't throw codes. Of course, that would be pretty sweet... on-board suspension diagnostics. I'll call my people.

Anyway pretty much all you did by unplugging the sensors was psyche-out your ECU, the problems are still there whether it's reading them or not.

Try resetting your ECU and check the codes one more time just to be sure.
