Low fuel light comes on too late
97 Integra GSR
Recently, the low fuel light has been coming on too late, or sometimes not at all. Usually, it come on when I've used up 10.5 gallons on a 13 gallon tank, but recently, it didn't come on, and I was fuel starving when going around downhill corners. Today it came on, but the needle was already below the "E" mark, and I think I had used up 11.5 gallons at the time. Is there some problem with the sensor?

fill that thing up, and reset you're mileage. keep going till you run out of fuel, and see how many miles you have on that tank. or go untill you think you've used up 12 gallons or so and do it that way. i don't recommend intentionally running out of fuel though. unless you want to, but that would be on you, lol.

Mine doesn't come on till after the tank is well past empty. It usually comes on when I have < 2 gallons left. You are fine. Just don't be a moron and you will not run out of gas. You should never wait for the fuel light to come on before you fill up.

you can pull the cluster and the fuel needle. slightly move it toward the E and the light will trigger earlier. the light doesn't trip till the needle is right on the E line or under. on some cars you're out of gas at this point. or you can listen to some of these posters who have no clue what causes this and just wanted to talk sh*t at you. you seem to have attracted the haters.

I requested a short story for a title.
Re: Low fuel light comes on too late
i think were supposed to come on when you have about 60 miles left till empty..so if your at about 10.5 spent in a 13 gallon tank your good...my prelude and integra do this kinda scarey how low theyll go before the light comes on..but i havent ran out yet

it's not a good idea to take the gas level that low anyway; gas cools the fuel pump and if it's not properly submerged it'll die faster. if you fill up the tank at proper intervals you'll never see the light anyway, i'd say this is something that's really not worth messing with.

Yeah, don't you hate it when people editorialize rather than answering the question?
In any case, I dug out my Helms manual, and it shows that the low fuel light comes from a sensor in the fuel level measuring unit. So I don't think moving the needle on the gauge will help, because the light will still come on too late (in terms of actual fuel level). I can't tell if this is a separate sensor from the fuel level, or just comes on when the fuel level reaches a certain percentage. It also appears that I need some kind of a special tool to pull the fuel level meter out.
