Default Issue with V-tec

Okay, I have a quick question, and I was looking for some help/advise.
Like my name entails I have a 96 GSR.
I've noticed recently that when V-tec engages I'm getting a weird noise coming from the engine, sounds almost like a whisle or pinging. I don't notice this at all below 4400rpm, only when Vtec engages. Since this started happening I've avoided hitting V-tec all together.

Recently I changed the timing belt, water pump and belts(about 1000km ago). The car has 197k on the Odo. I'll try and take a quick video for you guys later to help understand what the noise is.

Is this something you have heard of or is this common at all?

Any input would be appeciated.

firstly before all the hate flows in, it is spelled VTEC...secondly if the pinging noise occurs only when vtec engages i would look towards the lma's (lost motion assembly)

Vtec not vtech. vtech= phone company.

When was the last time you had your valves adjusted?

Given your explanation, the LMA's might be on their way out as someone mentioned.

Regarding the LMAs (lost motion assemblies), they should be fully extending whether VTEC is operating or not, as the middle rocker arm rides on them.

Any CELs, OP?

when you are not in vtec and the rockers are not bridged together with the locking pins the rocker arm that the vtec lobe rides on basically just sits there. without the lost motion assembly the rocker would just sink or most likely fling itself around from vibration. so this item, the lost motion assembly sits underneath of the vtec rocker arm and keeps it held up so the vtec lobe on the cam can ride on it

That would yield noise when not in VTEC. The OP has a noise when in VTEC.

What type of gas are you running? Might want to step up the octane level.

Lol I guess I had that coming, I was in a rush while trying to get this typed.

Kind of embarassing. Anyways thanks for the input guys. I run either 91 or 93 octane depending on which pump I can get to.

Just giving this a quick bump.

So I looked into picking up LMA's. Called around locally and the dealer was the only place I got a listing. 75 bucks each LOL. Ordering online seems like a much better option. Do you guy know of any relaible vendors hat I can Order parts?

I also read you can run prelude LMA's at a fraction of the cost. Is there any special procedures required to run those verses GSR spec LMA's?

Thanks in advance.

Someone has an almost new set of ItR LMA's for sale not that long ago. Search in the market place. A new set should run about $400. Used is another ball game.

Don't use prelude LMA's. They are not as springy(technical term Lol) as the ItR or GsR lma's. You will also need to use a spacer with them as they are shorter.

As far as parts go, www.acuraoemparts.com
