Default intake

should i get a short ram intake or cold air intake? if i buy the cold air would the rain mess it up? would it damage the engine? i know that it delivers cooler air but should take the risk and buy one? its for a 97 integ gs 4dr

a short ram will give you a louder engine noise, more aggressive.

for the cold air, make sure you buy a 2 piece one, and add a aem bypass valve to it, that valve eliminates "hydrolock" which is water getting in your engine.

get a CAI, but don't get the bypass valve, its a waste of money and you lose hp. If you don't drive like a moron when it rains you'll be ok. Just avoid DEEP puddles (see lake) and you should be fine...

a bypass valve only work when your filter is completely submerged in water

I think by adding a bypass value you lost that extra 1-2hp the CAI gets you...so if you're really concerned about floodding it, then get a SRI, unless you ever drive around in 3' of water, you won't have a problem.

in my old LS i had a cai and i never put on the by pass valve. i was just careful when it rained. you should be fine if you want the cai don't worry about the rain just becareful. the short ram is cool too from seeing and feeling them in other cars but with my experience cai didn't let me down. however now with my R i put the icebox so i don't have to worry about it. i can just drive.

you are going to get many diff opinions about this issue..and here's mine, with my experience with both, i preferred the shortram just because i liked the sound of it better and plus with a cai you only get about 1-2hp more anyway. All this talk about hydrolock is a waste, unless you plan on driving through huge puddles your chances of getting hydrolock are minimal.... rather than spending the extra $$ on a cai just get the shorty and then you wont have to worry about buying a bypass valve anyway

I ordered a CAI but have yet to get it. I'm thinking about getting a short arm intake as well now that the point has been brought up about driving through puddles. Rains a lot here in the Bay Area during winter so I might switch it out then to be safe. Get short arm though, I've heard better things about them than CAI.

Cooler, no, louder, yes... it does 0 for performance. My suggestion is to get the comptech icebox or DIY

get the iceman.

short ram when it rains, cold air when its not.

aem, iceman, injen, all the same crap.

why pay more, when u can get the iceman.

only problems with cai: it gets dirty really quick. not just dirt. but pebbles, crap, etc...
