idiot of the year!
im such an idiot. i was adding some oil in my teg at night and my dumb a$$ forgot to put the oil cap back on. drove around a day w/out it and my engine bay is covered w/ oil. most around the throttle body area. did i do any serious damage? it happened 2 days go, and freaky thing happened tonight, i found oil on top of my hood around above the headlights!! im like wtf!! im freaking out. please help a brother out.
did you oil light come on at all....and after you realized did you check the dipstick...if it was dead dry you could have messed something up but if there was still oil in there there shouldn't be a problem...hope that helps
oh yea...i checked my dip stick like 5 times. i was/still am freaking out. my oil is full. surprise i didn't lose anything measurable. anyone can explain how i got oil on top of my hood (outside).

right on.
Also, the oil on the hood. your driving around all day, and the oil cap was off, there is a chance for the oil to get anywhere. Gravity will take it where it wants, and if it splattered then it could get on anything and eventually just smere and spread. Just learn from this and always check....

thankfully it did go on your hood and you saw it otherwise it could have gone on for longer and caused some serious damage. But anyways where was the oil cap. Like where did you put it when you took it off that you didnt see it and forot to put it back on?

You got pretty lucky , a good friend of mines daughter got her oil changed at Tire world here in town and they forgot to put the cap back on and it actually caught her car on fire , burnt the engine bay completely up , let me tell you she got a new car from the deal ,
OT: this kinda reminded me of my friend who was curious to watch the cams rotate while the engine was at idle
. Guess what color shirt he was wearing when opened the oil cap.
Yeah things like this happen as a reminder to always be watchful of the things you do. If things like this happened in the aviation field they tend to have more than just engine failure at risk it's peoples lives. Same with respect to cars that are on the ground, as it was mentioned a fire hazard was a high possibility. It's good to hear that every thing is all right now. I'm pretty sure from now on you're going to double/triple check your work before you decide to close up shop next time. We've all been there before at on point or another.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Just put the cap on, refill it and check the level, and clean the mess up. A little worse than forgetting to put your gas cap on but motor-threatening unless you eventually lost too much oil and totally neglected it and ran the motor dry with a huge mess under the hood.
