ID a sensor for me
There's this little sensor on the head under the distributor, with a gray plug and just two wires. One is green, one is red (at least on my 97 b18b1). Anybody know what it is?
If nobody can identify it without pictures, I'll get some up tomorrow or the day after if possible.

Its the 14th coolant sensor on the integra. I believe thats the one that goes to the ECU for the cold idle enrichment/idle up value. The one on the thermostat housing should be the fan control and then the little 1 wire crap right in front of that is for the gauge cluster. I might have the fan/ecu mixed up, but I believe thats correct. Its a ECT sensor all the same.

Sweet that's what I was thinking for some reason (that it was a coolant temp sensor) even though I didn't really have a clue... but what did you mean 95 integra when you said "the 14"?
Depending on the year, the integra has 3 or 4 coolant temp sensors.....seems like alot of coolant sensors to me. Especially when you consider that everybody says none of them are that accurate and the needle is a dummy gauge. Seems like having 1 vs 3 would be the ideal thing.
coolant sensor, and why did you want info on this?...i just changed this sensor today too...hehe my fan wasnt working, well if this sensor is bad then get ready to spend like 35 bucks

It wasn't bad, I was just wondering because the wires ripped out of the plug on mine and I just got curious.

That's funny, this sensor is for the ECU not the Fan Switch.

The temp gauge isn't a dummy gauge. It can tell you if your car isn't reaching operating temp, and can tell you if you are overheating. Mine is still accurate after 14 years of service. Now, the oil pressure (idiot) light is more of a candidate for dummy status, because it doesn't come on until your car is already low in pressure and causing engine damage. That's why I have an oil pressure gauge installed.
As for the number of coolant temp sensors, they are all needed. One is to operate the cooling fan. If you did away with this sensor/switch, the fan would have to be on all the time drawing constant power from the alternator causing more parasitic drain on the engine. The fan motor itself has a limited lifespan and constant use would require swapping it out more often. Another sensor is to the temp gauge which is important for obvious reasons. And finally, the ECTS that feeds the ECU is an important part of the system to insure proper engine management. I know, blah, blah.
