Default how important is the O2 sensor

I have a 94 and i believe i have the same stock 02 sensor .
Should I change it? What would be the benefits of changing it? Need help because i don't wanna change it if i dont have to, it's kinda expensive.

Are you throwing CEL (Check Engine Light)? If you don't get any CEL, then don't worry about change it. However, if you're throwing a CEL due to an O2 sensor, then you should change it as soon as your pocket will allow it.

The O2 sensor basically let your engine achieve stoichiometric (sp?) air:fuel ratio by "sniffing" the exhaust gas. If it is broken, you could run lean or rich, depending on the problem with the clogged/faulty O2 sensor. (And, many times you won't pass emissions.)

To put it simply, your engine won't run at an optimal A:F condition which is .

Hope that helps.

thanks for the replies
Whats the probability of my o2 sensor not working to its full potential?
it's the original one from 94.
Because I cut the o2 wires a year ago (i was changin my header) and the check engine light didn't even go on. I rewired them back and it was fine. I was just curious because my mpg is not as good as it should be. Less than 300 but close per full tank of gas.

i have a 94 GSR also and my O2 sensor went bad and i had to change it. If your not getting the CEL light, then dont bother to mess with it until it does.
