I guess I'll throw in my 2 cents as well....
I also ordered an HID kit way back in the day on the old VisualDynamics.ca group buy. I paid $400 for a pair of Philips ballasts, Philips D2S bulbs modified with a 9006 mounting ring, and adapter harnesses. I never bought into the whole uber-high kelvin rating, I stuck with the OEM 4300K used in all OEM HID applications.
Then I decided to take the plunge and go the retrofit route. The kit really was not that great at all compared to cars with HID projectors. So I picked up some Hella bi-xenon projectors (the idea of being able to have 4 high beams intriuged me hahaha) and 2 new un-modified 4300K D2S bulbs for about $225. I was able to re-use my same ballasts from the kit.
I had just bought a complete 98+ front end including headlights a few weeks prior, as I had rear-ended a van and needed to repair the front end anyway. I had broken my right headlight, had already ordered another headlight before I got the 98+ front, and also had another broken headlight that I got for free from a bodyshop. So using all the spare headlight parts (inside parts of the broken lights were still intact) I was able to do the retrofit with no downtime to my car other than a few hours.
So not including the parts I bought for the front end conversion, all my HID stuff has cost me around $650, including the old HID kit and the retrofit. If I had only done a retrofit, it would have cost me maybe $450 for the bulbs, ballasts, and projectors. You can get complete setups for less than that from http://www.hidplanet.com
The difference between my old kit and my current retrofit is huge, even with these Hella bi-xenon projectors which are not that great compared to other HID projectors in terms of overall brightness and sharpness.
Don't kit, retrofit

I'm not saying that my retrofit is the same as the kit. It is better of course due to the wideness and brightness of oem hid. All I'm saying is that since integra has pretty nice projector already, putting a kit in there isn't that bad. Therefore, the retrofit is better than the kit itself, but to me, it not that much better. Let say, retrofit is an A+, hid kit in (only) integra's headlight is a B.

well I disagree... my HID kit in stock projectors was marginally better than stock, meaning it was brighter, but the beam pattern on the ground was the same, with nasty hotspots in front of the car.
My retrofit is leaps and bounds above and beyond the kit in all areas. Better beam pattern, spread, distance, even illumination without hotspots, nicer cutoff, plus the bi-xenon function.
And that's all with a dull metal reflector bowl inside the projector. If it was mirrored like most other projectors are, it would be even better than it is now.

i agree with patrick, cause i had a phillips d2s 6000k bulbs phillips ballasts, and it isn't comparable to my now 4100k phillps bulbs and ballasts through my 2sk retrofit
