Help Please
Ok so I'm coming home from my girl's house tonight and I notice that my car is making a "grinding" sound. I have a 97 GS and it's AUTOMATIC This sound appears to be coming from the trans? but im not sure. It sounds like something is grinding/loose. This sound is not constant, only when I let off of the gas pedal, and it doesnt happen all of the time, only when the gears are shifting down from about 25mph. I tried to describe the sound as best I could, does anyone know what this could be? I'm hoping something is jsut loose? Thanks.

Re: Help Please (IVI)
u sure its not a rattle, like your heatshield maybe?
I just got off the phone with my friend, he said it could be guess what....the HEATSHIELD! How would I go about checking if this is the cause? Like I said, it only reallys does it when shifting down from about 25mph. When I'm accelerating, it doesnt seem to do it. Can the heatshield be removed or possibly welded if this is the case? Thanks IVI for your response.

Re: Help Please (i luv my 97 teg)
go under the car and see if its loose. its a piece of metal that is around hte exhaust piping.
shake it with your hand to see if you can replicate the sound it makes when you downshift.
do not go under the car without jackstands. make sure its properly supported.
you can either remove it all together, or secure it with bolts, or what i love to use is a metal hanger twined around. works wonders for me on a bunch of cars, subaru, toyota..etc.
no problem. i hope it helps.
