Default Help Installing Shocks

ok, i just bought new struts from guyuenvy (really cool guy, honest!) on these boards and now i need help installing them. i have the general idea of what to do, since i watched my friend do it last time, but is there any site that has step by step, bolt by bolt instructions? or maybe if someone is around woodland hills(91364 zip) they would care to join me?

thanks

Definately get some help before you start...you could waste alot of time if you dont do it in the right "sequence" or even cause personal injury.

well you can always take out the shock/spring assembly out of the car. Than take that to a shop, they should decompress the spring for a minimal charge, if stock spings. Dont try some ghetto *** rigged spring decompressor, esp on stock springs. You will hurt yourself.

*BTW after my dog does that on your avitar, it likes to wipe itself by dragging itsself along the grass. heh I thaught I would share that with you.

Good Luck! Dan (slowerthanu) that lil pimp daddy helped me out and everything went smoothly. Here's some sites:

http://internet.cybermesa.com/~drew/...uspension.html
http://www.bseries.net/html/garage/spring.php
http://www.performanceix.com/how-to/...ngs_shocks.asp
http://www.geocities.com/rednalyn/shocks.html

Make sure you go buy a good lubricating spray like Liquid Wrench, WD-40, or that "As Seen On TV" spray that Dan and I have. Spray the LCA Bolts, which have been notorious.....those damn bolts, bastards...gosh, sorry getting emotional.

Good LuCk TaWp DaWwGy DoGg!

thanks for the help guys

here's a little more detail and another question

ok, my current setup is eibach sportlines and stock gsr shocks, i want to replace the stock shocks with koni yellows.

am i still going to need a spring compressor? i've heard that the sportlines are short enough that they don't need to be compressed, so would it be safe to separate the sportlines from the stock shocks?

argh, i'll probably be doing this saturday or sunday......

start w/ the right rear shocks. if any bolts seize, it'll be those near the exhaust.

ohh god, please dont' let that happen! when i was replacing my exhaust, one of the bolts was stuck and it took me and my friend like 3 hours to get that sucker off. we had to pull everything from the header back then work on it with some big *** plumbing wrench (the orange ones)

You'll be fine. Just make sure you get a good spring compressor. Never do shocks without one. You'll hurt yourself.

Yes, yes, good spring compressor - veddy veddy important.
Autozone actually rents a spring compressor set. Real simple, not the safest in the world, but they work, and perfectly harmless if you are careful. I actually use two sets of compressors (4 total) for extra safety and so the spring compresses evenly all the way around.
Good luck, and be careful.

dude..........that's some BS!!!
i went to sears, bought a ratchet and socket set for $50, after that i went to fix the crack in my window for $35. drove over to my friend's house to borrow his spring compressor (same one autozone rents) and then went to my other friend's house to get my struts installed.

we got the car up on stands, removed the wheels, and then figured out how to pull the spring/strut assembly out. it was very easy to that point. i'm using eibach sportlines and they were short enough so that i didn't have to compress them to pull them apart from the strut. i got the springs off and to my surprise, the koni yellows were shorter and so i needed to compress the springs.

i started to compress the springs evenly using both compressors, then i compressed them as much as i possibly could. when i tried to put them on, they were still to long and i couldn't get them onto my struts. i was pissed and thought maybe i need to start from the other side with the fat part on bottom. i was in the process of loosening the compressor and then all of a sudden one of them just falls off while the other remains attached. since only one is attached, the spring bends to a wierd *** angle and bends the rod on the compressor slightly.

i then spent the next 2+ hours trying to remove the damned thing, i ended up using the other compressor to release the other one, then that compressor got fuxored up when i took it off becuase it got threaded (you gotta see it to understand).

i ended up taking my spring/strut assembly to pep boys and ask them to compress the thing for me, they charged me $40 just to that simple ****!!!!!!! that's half the cost of paying someone to do it!!! anyhow, by the time that was done, it was to late to start on the rear struts and my muscles were shot (from trying to free the farking bent compressor rod).

am i the only one that this has happened to??? i was really really really pissed and angry, i could've saved myself a few hours and some money by paying someone to do it for me!

well, i'm done with the rant...........
