Help! Car undriveable
Okay, I have 2 broken studs on one of my rear wheels. Today when I took off the wheel to try and remove it I ran into a rather big problem. I cannot remove the two screws that connect the rotor to the hub, they're on tight as hell and I stripped one of them. Any suggestions on how to remove them? As of now I plan on drilling them out and replacing them after I replace the studs. I'm also having a horrible time putting the caliper back on the rotor. It will not fit back correctly to be bolted on. It does fit over the rotor though so I know its not the piston. Please give me some help wih this one, I'm gonna buy the tools I think I need after work today (wednesday) so please tell me what you think I should do. The car's obviously undriveable so this is a big inconvenience.
Ok, first thing you need to get is an impact driver fto get the rotor off. The retaining screws that keep the rotors on the hub are very difficult to get off and should only be taken off with an impact driver. From the sound of your post, you tried to use a screwdriver to get them off and stripped them. Try the impact driver, it will work (as I know).
Do you have the caliper bracket off the caliper when you are trying to put the caliper back on the rotor? If you don't, put the caliper bracket on the rotor, then bolt up the caliper. It should go on very easy. Don't force it. if you have to force it, something is not right.
It does take a little bit to line up the caliper bolt holes, but not much at all. If you are scraping the brake pads on the rotor, take the caliper bracket off.
HTH.

Haha.....this same exact thing happened to me last weekend,
and since I don't own an impact driver, I was pretty much SCREWED...
So I just drilled out the bolts, put the new rotors on, and replaced the bolts.....what a pain in the ***..possibly the longest brake job I've ever done...
Peace

Man, that weekend was just keeps getting better and better for you... Don't tell me that you lost the second stud trying to change your wheels back...
Hope your luck changes dude...

Hey Tempest X, yeah, I lost a second stud on the same hub while switching my wheels back later. Can you believe that crap? Anyway, I've given up on making the caliper fit properly myself, I can't do it. I'm going to a brake shop this afternoon and telling them to do it for me. Oh, and my rear rotor is NOT warped. I kinda thought it would after getting really hot yesterday and with my dumba$$ leaving the parking brake on all day. But it didn't. Today, just in case, I just left the car in gear, didn't use the parking brake. Oh, and Tempest X, I'm not sure if its posted yet, but I was told that somehow I managed to grab 1st place in GS last weekend. It seems that my "practice" run with a passenger and a hit cone was still enough to win, lol. So I feell better about breaking those studs now
Sorry, I might have made this post sound like I was replacing my pads. What I did was replace two hub studs, and to do that I had to take off the caliper and rotor. When I was reassembling the brake, I used the old rotor and old pads. I'm replacing that stuff in 2-3 weeks. And yeah, I did push the piston back by twisting it. Thats what doesn't make sense, the caliper would easily fit over the pads and onto the rotor, but it won't match up with the bolt holes
And no parking brake of course
