Default Heat shield

I was wondering if anyone has any experience taking off the topmost heat sheild that starts right after the cat and is only about a foot long. It is not any of the ones on the exhaust pipe itself, those are long gone, it is the one attached to the body of the car. If I took it off would it hurt anything inside the car? Would it burn/melt anything? It rattles profusely at certain rpm's and generally elsewhere throughout the rev range, like an annoying accompanyment to my engine, and drives me nuts. I know it is nothing else because there is nothing else to rattle, I took it all off. Anyway, any help is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

edit: This is on a 94 GS-R

Thanks for the help. Yes, they are as tight as they are going to get. Do you know if I would damadge any part of the car in just taking it off?

I'm not sure, but I do know the CAT gets VERY VERY HOT. Can you make the plate move with your hands?

Thanks again for the help. I can't move the plate around but if i flick it with my thumb it rattles. I'm pretty sure it is beacause it is two pieces that are spot welded together and the two pieces are not in harmony with eachother . The welds look fine though.

I removed ALL the heat shields under the car after installing my firstexhasut because it would rattle like crazy. I have been running like that for almost 1 yr now with no problems. The cat has its own heat shields.

Thanks a lot for the info. 1fast. Just to clarify beyond any doubt, did you also remove the two piece galvanized heat shield that bolts up on the body right after the end of the cat? I have gotten rid of ALL of the heat shields that bolt directly to the exhaust pipe itself as well as the cat, but I still have all these galvanized ones that hang from above, attached to the body. Anyway, I might sound **** or dense but did you also remove these? Thanks a lot for any more info.

Im sure Honda designed those heat shields for a reason. If they were only there to ratte, why would they have gone through the trouble of putting them there in the 1st place. Just fix it and keep all thet heat under the car, not in it.

Any suggestions you could provide on how to fix it up would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hmm, might want to try some sort if high temp sealer, like that orange stuff. Thats all i can think of. Also maybe call the dealer and ask what they use to keep em from ratteling.

Cotton Lix-yes you can take off the cat shield without hurting anything on the car. Mine has been off for several months with no problems. What you have to worry about with that is what you drive/park over because the cat can get very hot. Avoid flammable things like dry grass or gasoline spills and you will be fine. While you are under there you might also want to take off the ones that run down the exhaust pipe too, those will also eventually rattle, at least they did on mine. HTH
