Default Header Bracket on engine block necessary?

I've done a little research and so far I have found that SMSP, JG Edelbrock, JDM ITR, and Spoon headers do not use this bracket that bolts the bottom of the header to the block.

Is use of this bracket absolutely necessary for a reliable street setup?
What is its function?

It's supposed to keep the header from bending when it gets real hot. But I took mines off.

I had a POS greddy header that was recommended to me a few years ago, that the bracket was in the wrong place, so I COULDNT mount it, it was a 2 piece 4-2-1, and it would break about evrey 2 or so mos, and I would have to remove it and replace the gaskets. Untill finaly I got my hands on a welder, and replaced the stupid piece. Now I have done several races on it and it has been fine. lol...this is half for info to you, and half to vent what a POS product Greddy makes, and then no customer service number that I can find

It isnt necessary, but in some cases with 2 piece headers it can prevent gasket blowout between the 2 pieces.

I dont think it matters...if your header doesnt have a bracket, its no big deal at all.

Are there any other companies that make headers without the bracket?

I think the bracket is more or less there because the stock manifold is cast iron and weighs a ton. Aftermarket headers are quite a bit lighter, so it shouldn't be much of a problem.

The spoon header specificly is very light.

I'm having the rattling problem with my DC Ceramic 4-2-1...that, and the f*$%n shoulder bolts are $20 each from Acura... Has anybody noticed problems with the DC headers not lining up correctly with the cat? In order to make mine bolt up, I had to shove the cat around a lot, and the flanges just aren't nice and even...call me compulsive, but it's leaking a little bit (it stops for ~3 days after i tighten it up) and just generally doesn't meet my standards. Should I just warranty the thing and tell them to give me one that's bent straight?

Thanks

Matt

I've got a DC 4-2-1 on my GS-R & it fit up OK. It's been about 13 months & 13k miles & it doesn't rattle yet.

PS the bracket holding the OEM manifold to the block wouldn't fit on the DC header so I didn't use it.

Thanx Jim--that's encouraging. I think I just have a screwy header...the way it lines up with the cat is just not right. Good thing I bought it locally. I'll keep you posted.
