Default Half Shaft replacement

Are there any good writeups on this? I searched, but I couldn't find much.

I rotated my tires yesterday, and I noticed grease all over the inside of the front, passenger wheel. Tracked the source down to a torn CV joint boot. I'm guessing the boot could just be replaced and the joint regreased, but maybe if I have to tear it down I might as replace the shaft? It has 160,000 miles on it after all, so I'd do both sides. From what I've been able to gather, the left and right half shafts are the same part, and there's also an intermediate shaft on the driver's side. Is that correct? Should this intermediate shaft be replaced at the same time as well?

thanks in advance

you dont have to replace it. not alot of people eplace that part. just make sure its not grinding or has alot of play. Oh an there are diff axles for left and right the one that goes in the Half shaft has full splines. and the other only has like half of it with a lock ring on the end of it, Hope I helped

It's not grinding. There's still grease all over the joint. I just don't want to tear it down to replace the boot + grease only to have to replace the whole mess in 5k more miles. How much life do people typically get out of those joints?
