Default Funny engine chatter

I have an 88 teg rs dohc and my on my engine right under my valve cover its making a loud chatter. The best I can describe it would be like a old pair od those wind up teeth that chatter when u let go, just alot louder. Like a metal chatter. Valve lifter? If so how much for parts and labor at a garage? Thanks?

Sounds like your valves are ticking. You need to do a valve adjustment. As far as how much it would cost to get done i have no idea. But you can buy the right tools and adjust them yourself.

Damn, I need to get back into the valve adjustment business, I used to do a complete tune up with valve adj, valve cover gasket, carb adj, charging system check, idle adjustment, timing adjustment, tire pressure adjustment and maybe something I cant remember now for only about $100 what doesnt seem too many years ago, maybe it was.

I recommend doing each cylinder individually at TDC, you will do the intake and the exhaust adjustment together on that peticular cylinder while at TDC Compression stroke, I recommend doing it with the engine fully heated up and work quickly but accurately. Do an oil change afterwards, with a weak cylinder more fuel will have blown by the rings and will have contaminated the oil.

no real reason to go tdc for every cylinder since when youre tdc for cylinder 1 youre also tdc for cylinder 4...and vice versa for 2 and 3

haha..see i wasnt even thinking about the 2nd to 3rd degree burns. i already hate valve adjustments. i couldnt imagine doin one in a 180 plus degree environment.

There are specs for hot and there are specs for cold, cold is looser, not a problem but, the engine doesnt run cold, it runs hot and I DO MY VALVE ADJUSTMENTS HOT, thank you very much. Not every piece in the engine will swell up the same amount from the heat, metal does swell up when it gets hot hence the looser adjustment cold. Yes you can trust what the sticker under the hood states but I just have my own technique, I do not charge extra for working over a hot engine, I see that is becoming popular in the US now. I also do the oil change with the valve cover off so I can pour the oil all over the freshly adjusted valves, why, because I can.

Almost forgot, you can adjust the valvesby the book and only turn the engine one time and run through all the valves in just two moves but I like to be sure that a beginner can be taught both ways just in case there is ever a need to only adjust valves on a single cylinder, several reasons for that too, lets just say that a training environment and checking vacuum differences or spark KV or compression testing under different conditions, valve adjusted out of spec and then put just that one cylinder back into spec all by itself. Not every hydraulic lifter lifts the same either, usually do to severe wear and tear.

what are your specs for the hot engine...I kinda cant believe you found how much the metal would expand by to get the exact clearances that would be equivalent to the .006-.008 when cold...
