Default Exhaust Diameter - Is it the inner or outer diameter ?

Searchewd but couldn't find anything...may this is a stupid question!!!!

When talking about exhaust Diameter, what is considered? Iinner or outer diameter ?

If its the inner diameter, then a 2.5" exhaust should have 2.5" between the inner walls of the pipe?

thanks a lot for answering the silly question

I was talking about CAT back systems...for example when someone says, its 2.5" mandrel bent CAT back system, what does that mean as far as diameter is concerned?

thx

Piping is always measure in o.d
tubing is always measured in i.d

Catback exhaust systems would be measured in o.d as they are piping. However The wall thickness is not very much, the i.d would still be around 2.3 or so.

I know, well maybe im the one whos been fooled all these years in the industry, but when i purchase piping and tubing from all my distributors, theyve always said thats the difference. Thats how you distinguish the two.

This is interesting!!!!!!

Can some one post the Outer diameter of any so called 2.5" CAT back system?
I guess, it would show whether, the manufacture refers to OD or ID!!!!!

I am also going to look at the stock OD this evening

thx

Companies refer to Outer 99% of the time. If you have a "2.5" Catback" it will most likely be ~2.36" ID if the piping is the average 1/16th inch thickness. Some exhausts are heavier/thicker and will drop you down to a 2.25" ID.

Thats exactly what i was saying, only it should be 100% of the time for exhaust systems.

its all good...i work at a muffler shop thats why...majority of the time...the aftermarket catbacks are stainless and very thin (gauge) and thats why i preferr aluminized steel which is way thicker and durable (good if your cars dropped like mines)

This is usually the case for the sake of cost. Thats also why we usually build custom exhaust systems for out customers.

I just ordered a full stainless 2.5" turbo downpipe from an undisclosed source and I measured it and the 2.5" advertised is inner diameter. It is like 2.70" - 2.75" outer diameter. Sorry I am not more accurate I have a shitty micrometer.
