Default Engine Year

Can anyone tell me how the smog refs look up the vin numbers or serial numbers and find our the year of the engine? Can we tell from looking at these numbers or can the dealer tell us. Thinking about getting BAR but dont know if the ECU is going to match the year.
Ps. B18b: Integra LS

Thanks.

Look on your head by where the exhaust manifold is at, you will see a small circle with 2 numbers in it that are divided by a /, on my 97 ls is says "9/7"

You'll see what I mean when you see it.

You can translate the tenth digit of the VIN to the model year of the car as follows:

M = 1991
N = 1992
P = 1993
R = 1994
S = 1995
T = 1996
V = 1997
W = 1998
X = 1999
Y = 2000
1-9 = 2001-2009
It starts over at A in 2010

I believe this is true for all brands of cars sold in North America.

Yes both of you seem right.
The tenth digit is a (S) in my car's vin. It's a 95.
The engine is 9/4-B18b
Is there a VIN on the tranny or somewhere on the engine. I need to be reminded.

I've also heard that the first digit in the engine's serial # indicates the model year, like this...

My '95 GS-R has engine # B18C1 - 2nnnnnnn and '95 was the second year that engine was available.

My '98 Accord has F23A1 - 1nnnnn because '98 was the first year for that engine to be available...

Kind of off topic, but i had no idea the ECU had to match the motor when you went to take the car refed
