engine coolant
Sorry..Im a nube at motor maintanance..
my engine coolant is running low..can I just dump more radiator engine coolant into coolant holder?
or do I have to follow the instructions on the box.. 1. drain engine coolant 2. fill with water and let motor run for 10 min. 3. drain water 4 then refill..
can I just skip all these steps and add some coolant?
btw its a 94 Integra LS

Yes, you can just add coolant. Just use a 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water or you can buy the premixed stuff. Remember to use the green coolant and not the orange GM stuff.

km? huh? we done use the metric system here...they tried that in the 70's, we rebelled.

To be safe I like to change it every 30k miles (~48K km)

Corrosion isn't so much about any particular metal, it's about the COMBINATION of all the different types of metal that's in contact with the coolant.
The anti-freeze is all pretty much the same. It's the corrosion-inhibitor package thats all different. There's a few different types, Asian style has phosphates & no silicates. Does our owners manuals say no silicates? I don't remember...
The DexCool type has carboxylates (organic acids) that maybe last longer. But after a few years it breaks down & starts attacking nylon 6-6 which is probably in your cooling system somewhere. It's supposed to be OK as long as you don't believe the bottle, and DON'T leave it in more than 2 years.
Probably the worst thing is if you mix one type with another. Some types really don't play nice with each other. Like if you change your antifreeze & you don't rinse out ALL the old stuff with several clear water fill-drain cycles. Our Saab came with blue coolant that's almost identical in COLOR to Honda's. But I bet they're not the same chemically.

But he's talking about Saabs & Volvos, which traditionally have iron blocks, a different type of plastic radiator tanks, and probably a different mix of alloys that see the coolant.

You are right, silicates are bad for Honda cooling systems. The only commonly available coolant w/o silicates that I know of is Prestone green. Xerex, Peak and others I've looked at all have silicates listed on the back label.
So for Hondas, use either Honda pre-mixed or Prestone. You can even buy pre-mixed Prestone now.

i just flushed my radiator and i added the whole gallon of honda type 2 coolant. but now it looks like it runs out faster, and now i have to buy another bottle. is this normal?
