Coolant ratios?
Sup. About to change my thermostat and therefore i need to drain and flush the radiator. I went out and bought a big bottle of coolant concentrate (100%). I could have bought pre mixed but i didnt know what ratio i needed and didnt see a point because i can mix it myself. Anyway i've heard using 50% water and 50% coolant is standard practice or is it another ratio?
Thanks

I'm just curious, because I've never thought to ask; why do you have to mix coolant? why not just straight coolant? is it hard on teh pump? does it cool too much?
It may be a dumb question, but I honestly don't know.

Water transfers heat better than antifreeze/coolant. The only reason antifreeze is needed is to act as an "antifreeze" in cold weather and it helps against corrosion as well. I personally mix my antifreeze 70% water and 30% antifreeze, but thats because I live in cali.

I have a feeling the only reason they say to mix it is that it optimizes the freezing point protection (minus 34F) and the boiling point (265F). They don't mention specifics why it isn't suggested to use 100% anti-freeze. It may also be because anti-freeze ethylene glycol (possible carcinogene and cause of infertility), knowing this they may want to minimize the use of the product. Don't take my word for it. I searched and found no direct proof.
civictildeath: BTW, I use 50/50 mixture and where I live the temp easily reaches 40 below (with windchill). I've never had any problems.

EDIT: EG6 SiR beat me to it. Good info!
