Default Engine Compression Test

I'm having my 2000 LS motor go through a compression test. What would be the numbers for each cylinder?

here are my results.. what you guys think? The reason why i did a compression check was because the car is losing about 1 quart of oil a week about 260 miles of driveing a week. What is causing my car to lose oil. just a couple drops from my the oil pan screw, nothing serious. car is not blowing out blue or black smoke?

2000 ls motor w/45k

#1 - 170
#2 - 175
#3 - 170
#4 - 185

Around 200 within 10% of each other is always good...

170psi is good. 200psi is basically new. all cylinders need to be within 28psi of each other. that means the highest needs to be no more than 28psi over the lowest, but even if it's this much you should be worried. variation shouldn't be more than 10psi or so on a healthy motor. <140psi is defined as "in need of rebuild, like, yesterday." i'd expect about 180psi out of a 2000 car, but i don't know how many miles or how nice its life has been, so it's just a WAG (wild @$$ guess).

you're leaking the oil if it's not smoking white/blue-ish. a quart a week is a heck of a lot of oil, my friend. check the cam seal (exhaust cam, on engine on the passenger's side and towards the front of the vehicle), check the oil pan gasket, the valve cover gasket, and, of course, the nut (although not likely). clean the area to be checked very thoroughly, so that it looks like new. then drive to the store or something, come back, open the hood, and see where fresh oil has sprouted. then fix the leak.

yeah, the numbers are great for an old engine. they're phenominal, in fact. but compression test is not the end-all be-all to tell if you can boost. it's encouragement, but i would NEVER boost on an engine maybe half that old. i just don't like to take the chance, you know? you might get away with it for a few years, but i seriously doubt it. after that long, your engine is just worn all over. at minimum, i would hone and rering the engine, replace main and rod bearings, and replace oil pump. also adjust the valves; hell, why not? maybe at 100k miles, with those numbers, and a '98 engine, then yes. but at least i'll be good and not encourage you to do it. i would hate to see you f* yourself on my advice.

On a similar note - I tested recently at

1 - 195
2 - 200
3 - 205
4 - 195

184k miles on the clock. Leaks about 1qt. oil every oil change, no sign of burning oil.

wow dudes. how many times do you crank it over when you compression test? do you just do it until the pressure won't go any higher?

on mine i did like about 6-7 cranks...oh the ehead is a port n polish b18a head with 404 cams, dual valve springs, SS valves and completely stock block that burns 1qt of oil in about 9-12 days at high rpms... i already have a set of rods n pistons for a new block that im looking for... and i wont be running tha **** outta this engine with the turbo kit on it....just gonna take it nice n easy so i can break in the turbo

NOT to steal this thread,

What would be some good compression numbers for a 2000 GSR w/ about 123k highway miles?
What is the compression range for a brand new 00' GSR?
