draining radiator, do i need to do this?

Default draining radiator, do i need to do this?

i need to change my thermostat and i have to drain the radiator first, and none of the posts on HT mention this step:

it seems like ill have to do this right? also, any tips or tricks on keeping it clean?

I only partially drained the radiator using the little plastic radiator drain plug in the bottom, when I replaced my thermostat. Its not like you have to do a full flush of the system, just get enough out that you can work on the thermostat.
