Default Does the car have to be running when doing engine timing?

Ok, I don't have a timing gun so I advanced my timing little by little(moving the dizzy 1/16" at a time). Does the new settings go into effect after driving it around or is it still the same timing as before? I know I know, I need a timing gun. But I'm just asking if this will work? Thanks!

it should work both ways. But the best way to do it is to jump the service connector and then rotate the distributer cap towards the firewall just about 1-2mm. This will be approx. 2 degrees of advance. and yes the car should be on and at normal operating temerature.
