Difference between Automatic b18c, and Manual?
Does anyone know if there is a difference between an automatic b18c, and a manual b18c? I have heard on b16a's the auto counterpart has weaker cams, and the same for ZC's, however, I don't recall hearing anything on b18c's, can anyone help me out?
There is no USDM GS-R/Type R that came with an automatic.
nope no auto gsr that i've ever heard of
Generally when Honda applies an automatic to an engine like this, they usually lower the redline a bit and they change the cams to bring the power curve lower. This is because: 1. Automatics do not like to rev to 8000rpm's unless it is a pure racing transmission, and 2. They suck up so much power that they need to get into the power curve sooner to compensate for the loss. The NSX is a good example of this.

an automatic transmission will tend to need less power down on bottom, it will be geared higher (much higher, typically) but the torque converter serves two uses, there is the constant viscous coupling, so that there doesn't have to be a disengagement of the transmission, the second use is that the TC actually multiplies torque, there is loss, but imagine a gear set, if the input gear is rotating at 3x the speed of the output gear, the output shaft will have 3x more torque applied. it is the same way with the viscous coupling in a torque converter. if the input shaft and turbine are traveling 3x as fast as the output shaft and impellar then the output shaft will have 3x the torque.
the dirrect result is that you can have either higher gearing or less power low in the RPM range, and receive the same ammount of 'pull' as you would receive with a manual.
it is very true that an automatic has a slower rpm redline.
anyway, for the initial poster, all you will receive here is assumptions on the engine, as it is not a typical setup as you would receive in america, you should probably ask an import specialist.
my assumption: probably same engine, different cams and different processor.
Yes what the big man said is all true, but the whole "different cams" bit is not. My big sexy non vtec cams are the same ones STOCK that are in my friends 99 gs 5spd..... no difference whatsoever. Only dif between our cars is obviously the 5spd and auto and I have a redline of 6900rpms stock tack makes you think your at like 7 and change, but I'd rather believe the S-AFC which taps into the electronics showing RPM that go directly into the ecu, not a stock tach.
They do have them in the US. My neighbor had an auto GSR and i was like WTF???too bad her car got stolen.
1. Imported, RHD.
2. Swap into an LS.
3. Your neighboor is full of **** and you believed her.
hey whats up Gabe...i own a jdm b18c AUTO in my crx...still have the auto tranny in the backyard....yes the high end sucks....i dont know for sure if the cams are different but my qtr times are slow for my set up or similar set ups...im almost positive the cams are less aggressive than the normal 5-speed cams...only makes sense if the auto b16 cams are also junk...i was going to pull my gsr cams outta my integra and my crx to compare but im lazy and i dont really know how....
Funny how so many people are confused that there was a auto b18c in japan...i see this ever time someone brings up auto gsr

As for those who say they don't make auto GSR, maybe true, but the SE has an auto & i have a wife who i can't get to drive a stick.

whats this have to do with the thread?

Yeah, seriously...

It's hard to come across an automatic B18C ECU.

I wonder if its remotley possible to seperate ECU functions...have a GSR ecu running the engine and an LS ecu running the auto, just hook up the necessary wires to both...?
I guess you would through an infinite number of codes...
Hmm...can't beleive I'm going to put this much thought into an automatic...
I don't know much about them, but wouldn't the transmission need to have information on speed and rpm and engine load to know when and how to shift? Unfortunately, the ECU for running the motor also needs this information.
Also, LS trannies will want to shift before the power peak of the B18C motor.
Bah, silly automatics.

i used to have the matching auto p72....it fried on me though....im thinking of using my auto gsr tranny as an anchor for my boat
Well, thanks for everyone's replies. I still don't know for sure... but I did have one guy tell me that there was no difference, and he sounded pretty sure of himself.
The reason I started this thread was because I picked up a b18c long block... and the motor was an auto. I am going to be using my YS1 tranny, and p61 ecu from my 93 GS-R.
