Default Deciding on header...?

I've got a RS*R EXmag coming, but I want to replace the header too all in the same shot. I'm honestly thinking about dumping a bunch of money in a Mugen or Toda unit, but I'm apprehensive about the $1k cost. Please only post if you have experience with these or other good (and hopefully cheaper ) headers. BTW, I've got a stock 97 GS-R with AEM V2 intake and nothing else. I eventually want to get some CTR cams and some tuning, but the old "I/H/E" will get done first. Any suggestions?

Get a megan racing header. 160 bucks in the sponsor section. I got one on my LS and they're awesome.

I was looking at that, but that was one I've seen posts about bottoming them out onb the ground due to low clearance. I've got stock suspension, which would probably be fine, but I may lower it shortly, so that might be an issue. I've got a Megan Racing on my CRX, and it's great, but it's a 4-2-1 so it's got a lot of ground clearance.

Since you are interested in a higher end header, have you searched for the HT header tests? Very good resources.

SRZ Racing Official Header Test

SRZ Racing Header Test Part II

Titan's Header Test

Titan Motorsports Header Test Results

There are a bunch more. Just type in "header test" in search using current/archived threads.

I'd suggest looking into the SMSP 4-2-1 one-piece if you want an upper-end header that's less than $1000.

Much appreciated guys, it's good to get positive responses on H-T. I still haven't decided if I feel like dropping the cash on a great unit or less on a lesser unit. But I appreciate the responses.

Well, I went and dropped the cash on a Mugen piece from kingmotorsports.com. I may regret this someday, but I'll have a badass header to show for it...

I think you might regret it sooner than you realize. The Mugen header is a very well-made piece, but it is not a particularly great performer, especially considering the price. If possible, I'd suggest putting that order on hold until you are able to do a bit more research. In that price range, there are quite a few headers that will perform significantly better.

I'm sure I'll be happy with it too. Call me a ricer, but I based the purchase mostly off Mugen's great reputation with enthusiasts, not so much off who's part gave a single horsepower over other competition. Call it misguided faith, but I have a feeling this is the last header I will buy for this car.

Buying a part because of a company's reputation doesn't make you a ricer, but one should always consider all available information before making a decision. My reply was made with the hopes of helping you spend your money as wisely as possible and to save you from disappointment. As I said, the Mugen header is very nice from a quality standpoint. However, neither its design nor its performance are terribly great. In fact, from a pure performance standpoint, you could do just as well (or better) by purchasing the much less expensive DC Sports JDM 4-1. I simply suggested that you rethink the purchase with the knowledge that your money could be better spent elsewhere. Of course, if you are happy with your choice, please don't let my advice detract from that.

Oh that's cool man, I didn't mean to make you think I disagreed with you. I know I might've done better with the same or less money, but I at least know I've got a very high quality part that wouldn't be outperformed by most (not all) other options. I'm usually very much a 'function over form' person, but I splurged and got myself a nice bling piece. I feel kinda dumb for it, but I know I won't regret it.
